Barn Owl pellets (Aves: Tyto furcata) reveal a higher mammalian richness in the Restinga de Jurubatiba National Park, Southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Lemos,Hudson de Macedo; Silva,Carina Azevedo Oliveira; Patiu,Fabio de Mello; Gonçalves,Pablo Rodrigues.
The northern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro harbors the largest coastal sandy plains (restingas) of southeastern Brazil, severely threatened due to recent human occupation. In this context, mammal inventories becomes urgent to support biodiversity conservation and management policies. This paper aims to update the knowledge on the mammalian species richness of Restinga de Jurubatiba National Park by analyzing pellets of the Barn owl Tyto furcata. The analyses of 4745 mammalian bone fragments (1739 individuals) revealed the occurrence of 17 species belonging to the orders Rodentia (9 spp.), Didelphimorphia (2 spp.) and Chiroptera (6 spp.). The rodents Mus musculus and Cerradomys goytaca accounted for 77.2% of the total individuals preyed, suggesting...

Abstract In Brazil, 179 bat species have been recorded to date, representing 68 genera and nine families. Few data are available on the bat fauna of the state of Maranhão, so the present study was based on a survey of the bat fauna of the Inhamum Municipal Environmental Protection Area (APA Inhamum) in the Cerrado savanna of the eastern extreme of the state. This inventory provides new records of bat species for the state of Maranhão and the Cerrado biome. A total of 31 species (four families) were collected, representing 39% of the bat species known to occur in Maranhão and 28.71% of the species described for the Cerrado. The family Phyllostomidae was the most diverse, with 23 species (74.20% of the total), and also the most abundant, with 86.09% of the...

Whereas surveys of the bat fauna are available for some localities in the Brazilian Northeast, studies in the caatinga scrublands are still limited. The aim of this study was to survey the bat fauna in an area of caatinga scrublands in the Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN Serra das Almas), which is located on the Ibiapaba Plateau, State of Ceará. The bat assemblage of the reserve was surveyed in July 2012 (rainy season), and January 2013 (dry season), with a total of 19 sampling nights. We captured 347 individuals of 23 species representing six families. The bat fauna was characterized by the predominance of a few abundant species, in particular phyllostomid frugivores, and many rare species, which is frequent in studies based on mist nets at ground...

Biodiversity of the Neotropical Larginae (Hemiptera: Pyrrhocoroidea: Largidae): Description of a new genus and new species Anais da ABC (AABC)
MELO,MARÍA CECILIA; DELLAPÉ,PABLO M..
Abstract: A new genus of Larginae (Largidae), Parvacinocoris, is described to include a new species from Argentina and Paraguay, and P. stehliki (Doesburg) new combination, a species previously placed in Acinocoris, previously known from Surinam and Venezuela and in this paper recorded also from Brazil, Colombia and Guatemala. This new genus is similar to Acinocoris however it may be separated by the smaller size, the shorter antennae, the immaculate abdominal sterna, the shape of the parameres, and the presence of a pair of hook‐like processes on the aedeagal conjunctiva. Photographs of dorsal and lateral habitus of both sexes as well as the male genitalia of the new species are included.

Boring worms (Sipuncula and Annelida: Polychaeta) from Tropical Eastern Pacific coral reefs (Gorgona Island, Colombia) Boletín de Investigaciones
Cardona-Gutiérrez,María Fernanda; Londoño-Cruz,Edgardo.
ABSTRACT The knowledge of boring worms in the coral reefs of the Colombian Tropical Eastern Pacific (TEP) is scarce. To know which species bore into coralline substrates, experimental units made of dead branches of Pocillopora spp. were deployed and exposed in the coral reefs of Gorgona Island (Colombian Pacific) during various periods of time. A total of 571 worms in 21 species were collected. Of these, 18 were polychaetes and 3 sipunculids. Most of these species correspond to new records in the Colombian TEP, specifically 13 of the 18 species of polychaetes and 2 of the 3 species of sipunculids. These findings suggest that more research is needed to gain knowledge about the biodiversity of these poorly-known groups in understudied regions like the...

Soldati,Déborah; Silveira,Fernando Amaral da; Silva,André Roberto Melo.
Abstract This paper investigates the butterfly fauna of the ‘Serra do Rola-Moça’ State Park, Minas Gerais, Brazil. We evaluate i) the seasonal variation of species richness and composition; and ii) the variation in composition of the local butterfly assemblage among three sampling sites and between the dry and rainy seasons. Sampling was carried out monthly between November 2012 and October 2013, using entomological nets. After a total sampling effort of 504 net hours, 311 species were recorded. One of them is endangered in Brazil, and eight are probable new species. Furthermore, two species were new records for the region and eight considered endemic of the Cerrado domain. There was no significant difference in species richness between the dry and the...
